Exporting a WhatsApp conversation

This guide shows the WhatsApp files our tool accepts and how to upload them — from an iPhone or Android phone, with or without a computer. When ready, open the extractor and choose WhatsApp as the source.

What WhatsApp files we accept

  • Exported chat: a .txt file, or a .zip when you include media.
  • Decrypted database: a msgstore.db (.db).
  • Encrypted database: .crypt14 / .crypt15, with your decryption key.

Easiest: export a single chat

On iPhone

  1. Open WhatsApp and the conversation you need.
  2. Tap the contact or group name at the top to open its info screen.
  3. Scroll down and tap Export Chat.
  4. Choose Without Media (a .txt) or Attach Media (a .zip).
  5. In the share sheet, pick Save to Files (recommended) or Mail to send it to yourself.

On Android

  1. Open WhatsApp and the conversation you need.
  2. Tap the ⋮ menu (top-right) → More → Export chat.
  3. Choose Without media (smaller, faster) or Include media (creates a .zip).
  4. Share it to Google Drive, email, or Files.

Which should I choose?

The exported .txt/.zip is the simplest and works on any phone. It matches by sender display name (not phone number), so it’s ideal for a single conversation. For a complete history with real phone numbers and reliable direction, use the database options below.

Advanced: the full database

For a complete WhatsApp history you can upload the database. A decrypted msgstore.db needs no key. An encrypted database (.crypt15) lives at Internal storage/Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Databases/msgstore.db.crypt15 and requires the 64-digit end-to-end backup key you set in WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup → End-to-end encrypted backup.

Your key is never stored

The decryption key is used only to decrypt your upload for this one job and is never stored or logged. Provide it in the Decryption key field when you select a .crypt14/.crypt15 source.

Uploading straight from your phone (no computer)

Phone browser upload

You don’t need a computer at all.
  1. Export the chat with Save to Files (iPhone) or share to Files/Drive (Android).
  2. Open your browser and go to yourlegalaitools.com.
  3. Sign in, open the extractor, and choose WhatsApp as the source.
  4. Tap choose a backup file, browse to where you saved the export, and select the .txt or .zip.
  5. It uploads directly and securely; continue with number selection.
